I Thought I Made It Clear

It’s been so long since I posted. I have been busy with life—making life happen, exploring, and building myself up.

I was thinking of getting back into blogging as it feels like my online diary, a place where I can share parts of my life while still keeping some things private.

Over the years of living here in Canada, I’ve met many people through work. Some became friends—or maybe acquaintances is the better word. The connection wasn’t deep enough that we felt the need to constantly stay in touch, and that was okay. Life moved on, and so did we.

When I moved from one workplace to another and into a completely different industry, I met people from all walks of life. Some were young adults trying to find their footing, while others had decades of experience and wisdom behind them. Every friendship was different, and every person taught me something.

Then I moved to another department and met people around my age. I was genuinely happy about it. For once, it felt like I had found people who were in a similar stage of life as me. But with that excitement came a promise I made to myself.

I would set boundaries.

Not because I was afraid of getting close to people, but because I had learned from past experiences. I wanted friendships to remain just that—friendships. Nothing more, nothing less.

And honestly, I can be the closest friend you can have if you want me to be. I am loyal. I care deeply. I show up. I listen. I celebrate your wins and sit with you in your losses. But I also learned that caring about people doesn’t mean abandoning the boundaries that protect my peace.

Recently, something happened that saddened me.

A boundary I clearly communicated was crossed.

What made it difficult wasn’t that the boundary existed. It wasn’t unreasonable, hidden, or confusing. It was something I had already expressed openly and honestly.

That’s why it hurt.

People often think boundaries are created to keep others out. That’s not true. Boundaries are created to make relationships healthier. They tell people where our comfort ends and where our values begin.

When someone crosses a boundary, the pain isn’t always about the action itself.

Sometimes it’s about what the action represents.

It makes you wonder if your feelings were truly understood. It makes you question whether your words were heard. And even if the person never intended to hurt you, the impact remains the same.

The hardest part is that I don’t think this person is a bad person.

In fact, that’s what makes situations like this so complicated.

Not every disappointment comes from malice. Sometimes good people make choices that hurt others. Sometimes people get caught up in the moment. Sometimes they don’t realize the weight of their actions until it’s too late.

And sometimes, despite caring about someone, you still end up feeling disappointed.

I found myself sitting with mixed emotions. Hurt, sadness, confusion, and even a little grief—not because I lost a friendship, but because something about it felt different after that moment.

Maybe things will go back to the way they were.

Maybe they won’t.

The truth is, I don’t know.

What I do know is that boundaries are only meaningful if we continue to honor them after they’re crossed. Otherwise, they become suggestions instead of standards.

I still believe in friendship. I still believe people can learn, grow, and do better. I still believe that one moment doesn’t always define an entire relationship.

But I also believe that respect matters.

And sometimes the people we care about the most teach us the hardest lessons about it.

For now, I’m choosing peace. I’m choosing to stand by the boundary I created. And I’m choosing to believe that whatever happens next, whether the friendship grows stronger or grows apart, everything will unfold the way it’s supposed to.

After all, growing up isn’t just learning how to build relationships.

It’s also learning how to protect yourself within them. ❤️
